Septon Garrick spread the word of his service quickly through the town,
including asking a guard to inform Lord Rocsly that a service was about
to start. Maarz Kinnemorne stayed outside watching the castle gates
from the eaves of the Sept. The service was due to start and Lord
Rocsly hadn't turned up so Septon Garrick lead the congregation in some
rousing Warrior hymns against the heathens of the Iron Islands to give
the Lord a bit more time. It was to such a rousing sound that Lord
Roclsy, his wife and two members of his personal guard entered. Halfway
through the service Tyrion and Gwint Kinnemorne entered the Sept
accompanied by Cadfael. Maarz attempted to slip unnoticed at the same
time but everyone else drew such attention to themselves that they all
walked up the nave together. They bowed to Septon Garrick, bowed to the
Lord and then stood pointedly by the second best pew until the
merchants had vacated it for those of noble birth.
Lord Rocsly soon recognised the house colours and emblems on their
clothing, his eyes narrowing in anger and hatred as he did so. At the
end of the service, after he took his blessing, he walked over to the
Kinnemornes and demanded to know what they were doing in Rocksport. He
then insisted that they come to his castle and posted his guards at
each end of the pew to ensure they would not get lost whilst walking
across the market square. When Gwint protested that they would not be
able to receive a blessing from the Septon one of the guards stood
aside to let them all out. Cadfael, a follower of the Old Gods, however
stood his ground refusing to take a blessing from Septon Garrick.
This enraged Lord Rocsly who accused Master Tyrion of being unable to
control his own men. Master Tyrion winked at Cadfael and lashed out in
a mock punch accusing him of shaming his Lord. Cadfael rolled with the
punch 'accidentally' knocking over one of the guards whilst Maarz took
the opportunity of the confusion to escape from the remaining guard.
Septon Garrick called for the congregation, full of zeal from his
sermon and choice of hymns, to restrain the unbeliever. However they
baulked at swarming such an obviously dangerous man and so the moment
of tension passed. As Cadfael helped the fallen guard to his feet
Masters Tyrion and Gwint prepared to leave with him for Rocsly's
castle. Maarz however was still running away from the guard and fled
into the upper, forbidden, levels of the Sept. Calling for his guards
to deal with the desecration as Septon Garrick urged the congregation
to leave, Lord Rocsly returned to his castle, trailing Masters Tyrion
and Gwint and Cadfeal behind him.
In the market square Master Tyrion was bumped into by Josiah Truman, a
grizzled former watch Sargent from Kings Landing. He had been born on
Kinnemorne lands and had recently returned to tend his dying parents
before becoming a watchman for Lord Urquart Kinnemorne. Josiah
delivered the message that Lord Urquart had sent him after his son to
deliver - Lord Gostt's wife had died, leaving their three year old son
as Lord and the need for a steward for the Kinnemeve lands was
therefore even greater. Josiah then stayed in the market as the other
three members of the Kinnemorne house entered Rocsly castle.
In the small castle's even smaller great hall Lord Roscly formally
received them and demanded to know what they were doing on his lands.
When Master Tyrion answered that they were going to pay their respects
to the Kinnemeve family Lord Rocsly countered that he had great glee in
passing on, no signing, the order banning them from the Kinnemeve
lands. After all when the upstart Ser Gostt was declared Lord over half
the Roscly's lands, including the very castle where Lord Hal had grown
up and all his best farmland, had been taken from him. Besides he also
had his own family interests to take care of. Lord Gostt has married
Lord Hal's cousin making the infant lord Kinnemeve an equal blood
relative of both houses. Master Tyrion argued that it was the will of
the one true King that Ser Gostt had been ennobled and that Lord Rocsly
should accept that decree. Lord Rocsly agreed with that but Cadfael
noticed that Lord Rocsly bridled at the mention of the one true King,
perhaps he had fought for the black dragon of Daemon Blackfyre against
the red dragon of King Daeron II.
Lord Rocsly was still refusing to let the Kinnemornes to see their kin
but he did declare himself to be not without feelings. Lord Roclsy
announced that he was having some difficulty with smugglers and, if
house Kinnemorne could deal with them for him within the week, he would
turn the other way whilst they had brief access. This was though on the
condition that he could have the hand of their man who had desecrated
the Sept.
Meanwhile, back at the Sept, Maarz decided to hide in the rafters
whilst Septon Garrick slowed down the guards as much as possible and
ushered the congregation to safety. Unfortunately Maarz was spotted and
had to force apart a couple of wooden roof tiles and escape onto the
Sept roof. He tried to jump to the next building and make an escape in
true Parkour style across the rooftops. Maarz though fell agonisingly
short and landed in the street, his fall cushioned by a pile of manure
and rubbish from the market. Septon Garrick tried to misdirect the
guards from the entrance of the Sept to allow Maarz to escape but
failed and Maarz fled across the market into the town, followed by a
group of guardsmen raising a hue and cry. Septon Garrick saw his
congregation out of the Sept with the promise of a dawn service and
then set off for the Castle, aiming to convince Lord Rocsly that the
holy law had been broken and that the Septon rather than the Lord
should determine punishment.
As Maarz started to pull away from his pursuers they were joined by
Josiah, his watchman's instincts piqued by the sound of a hue and cry.
When Josiah realised who the quarry was he redoubled his efforts, as
his dedication to justice had rankled these past months at a former
bandit and thief such as Maarz free and in service to a noble Lord.
Maarz had almost pulled away when he started to be crowded in by the
townsfolk of Rocksport who also pulled aside to let the watch through.
With the watchmen's blows whistling past his ears Maarz tried some
acrobatic moves to twist down back alleys and double back to loose the
guardsmen chasing him. He had almost given them the slip again when
Josiah, falling behind, exhorted the guards to greater efforts. At the
sound of a familiar voice urging on those chasing him Maarz's
concentration faltered and he slipped badly and fell. The gaurds caught
up with him, swinging their cudgels at his prone form. Josiah grabbed
him as Maarz knocked guards to the floor and the guards finally beat up
into surrender.
Maarz was then dragged into the castle where Septon Garrick was waiting
after the Kinnemorne household had left for the comforts of an inn.
Septon Garrick dosed Maarz up with sedative and then proceeded to beat
Maarz very severely. He them dragged the unconscious Maarz before Lord
Roscly and tried to convince the Lord the the merciful, if somewhat
bruising, justice of the Seven should take the blasphemer rather than
the harsher Lord's justice. Lord Rocsly agreed, but only if he could
still have Maarz's hand if Master Tyrion failed to find the smugglers.
Septon Garrick then swore to the Lord that he would aid the Kinnemorne
household in catching the smugglers so that he could help his own
charge.
