Halfway to Ilsa's house Josiah retraced his steps back to the alley
where they had left the unconscious bodies of the men who attacked
them. When he got there he found that he watch had finally made an
appearance and were just checking them. Josiah managed to convince the
watch to taking them to Septon Garrick to be healed up. They set off
for the main Sept paying a young urchin to fetch the Septon to join
them.
On arrival Josiah and the watchmen waited for several hours whilst
Septon Garrick treated the unconscious attackers. When he emerged he
told them that all three of the attackers would live though he was very
concerned about one of them. Josiah then told the Septon that the men
he treated had attacked Maarz, Josiah and Cadfael lead by the bouncer
from the Lusty Sailor. The following morning they returned to the Sept
to find the treatment room empty. Septon Garrick told them that the
attackers were all there when he last checked on them in the middle of
the night. Maarz was able to determine no sign of a break-in and that
at least two people had dragged the unconscious men out. Septon Garrick
then ushered everyone out as he needed to prepare for the arrival of
the Kinnemeve Septa and the Seventhday service.
The four of them then went out into the town to by breakfast from the
Market and soon noticed that the atmosphere was very different to other
days, the town was tense and on edge and the number of guardsmen on the
town's Walls or patrolling the Market was half what it had been.
Fearing the worst Gwint, Cadfael and Maarz put their amour on and rode
out of the town to check on the Rocsly soldiers camped on the boundary
with the Kinnemeve lands. At the same time Master Tyrion dressed
himself in his finest noble's garb whilst Josiah, muttering something
about calming his nerves, retired to a tavern. At the border they found
that the soldiers were breaking camp and getting ready to march but
with no indication as to where. Master Gwint reported back to his
brother and Septon Garrick. The Septon told them that he would be
accompanying the Kinnemeve Septa back to Castle Lance to conduct a
service there and would find out what he could.
Master Tyrion decided to find out where Lord Rocsly was so, instructing
his brother to keep an eye on the Rocsly troops, he dragged Josiah out
of the tavern before he got drunk and marched up to the Castle. He
found Rocsly in his Castle busy and distracted and got an assurance to
review the effectiveness of his guardsmen as three Kinnemorne men were
attacked the night before and the attackers are still at large.
Gwint, Cadfael and Maarz rode back to the boundary and found the Rocsly
soldiers marching down the road towards the Kinnemeve castle. Cadfael
and Maarz ignored Rocsly's injunction and rode onto Kinnemeve lands to
try and beat the army to the castle. When they came in sight of the
army they were able to determine it was mainly foot-soldiers and not
equipped for a siege. Maarz and Cadfael then angled off the road out of
range of the crossbowmen forming up in the army's ranks with Maarz
chasing Cadfael shouting that he was a thief. Miraculously this was
believed and they managed to get away from the army and still angle
round it to get to the castle first. There they met briefly with Ser
Robert Shekyl and warned him that Rocsly's army was marching towards
them. Cadfael offered his assistance but it was declined as Ser Robert
knew of Lord Rocsly's injunction against them and was confident his
troops could cope. He gave Maarz a fresh horse and told them of a
concealed route back to Rocksport.
Back in Rocksport Master Tyrion went to call on their contact Ilsa,
only to be told by a servant that she was away for the weekend. He was
able to spot that several of the horses were gone so he left for the
centre of the town to gauge if the mood of the town had changed. He was
approached whilst at a market stall and asked to be in the Golden Stag
in an hour. An hour later Master Tyrion and Josiah turned up at the
Golden Stag, a journeyman's tavern. They were halfway through a flagon
of ale when another man came up to their table and told them to be
round the back of the tavern in ten minutes.
Josiah walked round the back in Master Tyrion's cloak imitating his
swagger with Master Tyrion following on behind hand on his sword. All
of a sudden they both found hooded and cloaked men with loaded
crossbows ushering them deep into the alley. A fifth man covered in a
voluminous hooded cloak them walked between one of the pair of
crossbowmen and, in a growl to disguise his voice, demanded to know if
Master Tyrion could be trusted not to turn over anyone over to Lord
Rocsly's watchmen just for evading the odd tax or two. Master Tyrion,
negotiating for his very life, just about managed to convince him that
he could be trusted and so the hooded leader announced that business
associates would be calling on Master Tyrion and Master Tyrion's father
in due course.
As the leader left his cloak snagged briefly on a lug of a timber
frame. As he rearranged his cloak Josiah caught a glimpse of a sheathed
dagger with silken threads tied around the haft.
