Session 5, Feudal Law and Brinksmanship | A Song of Ice and Fire
Master Tyrion and Josiah pondered the
significance of the silken threads they had seen on two separate
occasions. Josiah mentioned that silk was often used as a guild
emblem of sorts for the better quality brothels so they began
searching the town for them. During their afternoon's searching
rumours of what was happening at the Kinnemeve castle, Castle Lance,
started to multiply with every possibility from Lord Rocsly's death
to the capitulation of Castle Lance being banded about the markets
and shops. By late afternoon Maarz and Cadfael had returned and met
up with Master Gwint at their inn. They were found by Master Tyrion
and Josiah and so all five of them began searching. It was Josiah
that eventually spotted the silken threads in the hafts of daggers of
two men standing at the entrance to an exclusive gentleman's club.
Cadfael meanwhile found the Hanging Man, the tavern that he had
chased the men who had attacked him (and Maarz and Josiah) into.
Returning to the inn they found Master Tyrion changing into his
finest robes. He had just seem wagon loads of injured soldiers in
Rocsly and Kinnemeve tabards coming in through the town gates and had
decided to confront Lord Rocsly
When everyone was back at the inn and
dressed in Kinnemorne colours they marched to Rocksport Castle. They
were initially denied admittance but, after a fevered discussion of
their options, eventually they were permitted to see Lady Rocsly.
They were escorted to the Rocsly's small Great Hall where Lady Rocsly
was waiting for them sat in her husband's chair, guards armed with
swords and crossbows along all the walls. Master Tyrion demanded the
immediate cessation of hostilities, the removal of Rocsly men from
Kinnemeve lands and the payment of restitution to the Kinnemeve's.
When this was refused he challenged her House to a duel of champions
over who would have first rights to apply for guardianship of the
Kinnemeve family, the Rocslys or the Kinnemornes.
On behalf of her husband she accepted,
so Master Tyrion informed her that they would be waiting for her the
following morning in the market square. Lady Rocsly smiled and said
that as the challenged party it would be up to House Rocsly to offer
the time and place and as neither her husband or their champion were
at home she could not offer a time and place in this hall right now.
Master Tyrion pressed her on this point insisting that the duel
should take place the following morning before the attack was
completed and the duel became moot. Lady Rocsly refused Master
Tyrion's request once more assuring them that the duel would occur in
good time. Thwarted and angry Master Tyrion turned on his heels and
started to leave, to the sound of several crossbows being cocked
simultaneously. Lady Rocsly demanded that he turn round and take his
leave properly with the respect that is due to the Lady of the House.
Making the barest minimum genuflection Master Tyrion bowed and
walked out, the rest of his entourage in tow.
Cadfael decided that he needed to pray
so, as he hadn't found a Godswood near Rocksport, he and Maarz rode
out to the nearest woods to find what spiritual solace they could.
Everyone else helped prepare for the duel the following morning. The
following morning they were up with the almost with the dawn, armed
and armoured and then walked down to the market square.
Unfortunately the Town Crier was earlier, announcing the upcoming
duel in two days time as well as the punishment of the Kinnemeve
Septa for disobeying her Liege Lord and any captured Kinnemeve
soldiers who refuse to swear allegiance to House Rocsly. Cursing the
Lady Rocsly for preempting him Master Tyrion, as well as everyone
else, remained in the market square all morning, pointing out to
anyone who came nearby that they were here and ready to fight the
duel. Lady Rocsly came across to the market square halfway through
the morning to be confronted again by an angry Master Tyrion
demanding immediate satisfaction whilst there is still an independent
Lord Kinnemeve to petition Lord Tyrell about. Lady Rocsly demurely
pointed out that, with both her husband and their champion absent she
was hardly in a position to give Master Tyrion the satisfaction he
was seeking. At this Master Tyrion turned to Josiah and ordered him
to travel to Highgarden with a message for Lord Tyrell that the
Rocsly's have attacked their own bannermen, House Kinnemeve, and were
refusing to honour a judicial challenge in good time between the
Kinnemeve's closest relatives, House Rocsly and House Kinnemorne,
over who should have first rights to petition the Tyrells for
permission to have guardianship over the infant lord Stirling
Kinnemeve and steward his house till he reaches his majority.
At midday, with the exception of
Josiah, they all left their positions in the market and returned to
their inn. At the inn they found that their rooms had been
completely wrecked by someone searching them very thoroughly. When
the innkeep arrived at the scene he confirmed, between the angry
comments from Master Tyrion, that this had been done by Lord Rocsly's
soldiers. Leaving the innkeep to tidy up the mess made by Rocsly's
soldiers, with Maarz relieving him of the key to his cellar on the
way, Masters Tyrion and Gwint went to the Silken Threads whilst
Cadfael and Maarz went to the Hanging Man. Meanwhile Josiah went to
the quayside to negotiate with ship's captains for passage to
Highgarden.
Inside the Silken Threads the
Kinnemorne brothers found very plush surroundings (with lots of silk
in evidence) with men and women sitting in the common area drinking
wine and playing cards and dice games. Whilst the sixteen year old
Gwint went upstairs with one of the women paid for by his older
brother, Tyrion stayed downstairs hoping to spot further indications
of the Silken Treads links to smugglers. He briefly thought he
recognised someone as the leader of the group that had interrogated
him at crossbow point but decided he was mistaken. He did though
recognise one of the men who pointed a crossbow at him and invited
him over for a drink over his lunch. Master Tyrion managed to
persuade him that he was looking for hired muscle and was opposed to
Lord Rocsly.
Inside the Hanging Man Cadfael and
Maarz soon recognised one of the men who attacked them having a
lunchtime drink. Maarz bought a drink for him and they sat down at
his table. Through a mixture of friendly persuasion and veiled
threats they managed to convince him to say why they had been
attacked. He said that it was because Maarz had made disrespectful
remarks about the Lusty Sailor but his eyes glanced behind the bar
(into the room where Cadfael guessed he had chased the two survivors
of the attack upon them). After they finished Cadfael left the bar
and waited outside whilst Maarz picked an opportune moment and
slipped into the back room containing a couple of barrels and
equipment for fermenting. He searched it quickly and very quietly
whilst the bar staff were all busy out front. In a locked cupboard
Maarz found a couple of bags of malt tied closed with braided silken
threads. The bags though had strange emblems printed on them and the
remnants of seals so Maarz stole one and sneaked out of the back of
the Hanging Man. On their way back to their inn to meet with Masters
Tyrion and Gwint Maarz spotted Lord Rocsly arriving back in Rocksport
with a knight, some of his soldiers, Rocsly wounded and Kinnemeve
wounded and prisoners. Driving his wagon alongside Lord Rocsly was
Septon Garrick! Maarz gave the stolen bag to Cadfael and followed
Septon Garrick. Cadfael returned to the inn and found Josiah packed
and ready to go having secured passage on a ship leaving on the late
afternoon tide. Cadfael joined Josiah in drinking enough spirits to
help Josiah face the terrifying (for him) prospect of leaving a town
for the open wastes of the outdoors.
Unnoticed, Maarz followed Septon
Garrick back the Sept where, as soon as they were alone, he asked the
Septon what had been happening on the Kinnemeve lands. Once everyone
else to the Sept he told them what had happened and that he had
messages from Ser Robert Shekyl, de facto head of House Kinnemeve,
with coin to pay for their delivery for Lord Tyrell at Highgarden and
the King in King's Landing. Master Tyrion then instructed Josiah not
to embark for Highgarden but that Maarz should ride for the nearest
Maester to get the messages sent by raven and then ride back to
Rocksport. Maarz then rode out with the messages, two Gold Galleons
and a spare horse and Septon Garrick moved all of his belongings into
the Sept to preserve an illusion on neutrality in the upcoming duel.
The following morning after another
morning standing in the market making the point that House Kinnemorne
is ready for justice to be done and the morning service Josiah was
able to identify the bags as bearing the emblem of the city state of
Lys as well as it's broken customs seals with no evidence of the bags
having been inspected by Westeros customs officials. Septon Garrick
went to minister to the wounded men handing them each a silver coin
from a purse clearly marked as House Kinnemorne as he did so.
