Whilst he was inside Rocksport Castle Septon Garrick decided to find the Rocsly champion and over him a little herbal enhancement from his treatment bag.  His intention was that this enhancement would give the champion a brief rush before being overcome with lethargy to give Cadfael tan advantage in the duel if it took a long time.  Septon Garrick found Ser Jellicoe in conversation with Lord Rocsly and, taking him to one side for a private blessing, gave him some dried fungus to be brewed and drunk shortly before the fight.

At the same time Cadfael went out, with his arms and armour, alone to the woods for a final pray before the duel the following morning.  His prayers were interrupted by the sounds of approaching figures but as he stood to challenge them he heard nothing except the sound of crossbows being fired.  One missed him completely whilst the other was a poor shot and failed to penetrate his armour.  He then finished his praying before walking back into Rocksport, the quarrel still lodged in his armour.

Back in Rocksport Septon Garrick and Maarz spent a quiet night in the Sept (not entirely at Maarz's choice) whilst Masters Tyrion and Gwint went out to find a good tavern to eat in with Cadfael whilst Josiah guarded their rooms against possible sabotage. Cadfael almost immediately got into an altercation with men of the watch who objected to him walking round in full armour with a scabbarded sword but they were convinced but Tyrion who reminded them that a warrior often passed a vigil with his weapons and armour before a fight and pointed out that Cadfael was hungry. They found a good busy but not rowdy tavern where the owner would let then sit in a semi-private booth. They hijacked, and paid for the food going to a neighbouring table and sat quietly eating whilst throughout the in the topic of conversation was the upcoming duel and the odds against the two champions. Generally the home champion was favoured and Master Tyrion found good odds of two to one for a Cadfael victory. They were even approached by someone from their "new friends" wanting some inside tips on the fight.

The following morning they all arrived at the Sept. Whilst Cadfael stood outside Septon Garrick gave a somewhat nervy sermon before calling the congregation forward for blessings.  He checked with Ser Jellicoe that he had brewed the fungus and then told Master Gwint that he had given something to Ser Jellicoe that would help Cadfael, eventually, in the duel later that day.  Everyone then made their ways separately to the market square where they found that that a dais and a fence had been constructed in the middle of it. Master Tyrion sat on the dais along with the Rocsly family and other town notables, Septon Garrick took a place just in front of it, Maarz and Josiah stood strategically in the crowd and Cadfael stood at the edge of the square with Master Gwint as his second.  As he walked to his place Septon Garrick briefly showed Master Tyrion the empty purse so that he knew that the silver had been distributed.

Lord Rocsly announced to the crowd the purpose of the duel - the determine between the two families who would make the first application to Lord Tyrell for permission to become guardian of the Kinnemeve children ahead of all Liege Lord obligations. He first though announced that two matters of justice needed to be carried out.  He called for Septa Tanya Stone and accused her of publicly and wilfully defying her Liege Lord. He announced that he had reviewed the evidence and found her guilty and sentenced her to exile from all Rocsly lands, both past and what they are now. She was escorted out of the square by a pair of Rocsly soldiers.

He then called forward a group of over thirty Kinnemeve soldiers to swear allegiance to the Rocsly household.  He was then interrupted by Master Tyrion who announced that the men had all been given silver from the Kinnemorne purse and that any who wanted to should step forward and swear allegiance to House Kinnemorne.  Nine men did so to silence from the crowd, all sporting only minor wounds and most of then veterans from Lord Gostt Kinnemeve's old personal guard.  Lord Rocsly turned to Master Tyrion and loudly demanded to know how the men had got the coin and for Master Tyrion to stop trying to subvert his men.  Master Tyrion replied, loud enough for the crowd to hear, that the men were still Kinnemeve men and free to swear to another Liege Lord if they wished and that he would deal with the consequences from Lord Kinnemeve.  Lord Rocsly countered that this was hardly the point, these men were his captives, all the while the men were swearing their allegiance to House Kinnemorne.  Eventually they had all sworn their oath and Master Tyrion demanded their release as Lord Rocsly had no reason to hold Kinnemorne men captive.  With a face filled with rage he ordered the men released and into the care of Master Gwint.  He then tried to recover his composure and swear the remaining men to House Rocsly.  After they did so he invited them to join his watch but absolute silence followed as no-one took his offer.

Lord Hal Rocsly tried to compose himself for a moment once again and then announced the duel. As Septon Garrick stepped forward to bless the combatants (with Cadfael receiving a muttered may your Gods go with you) and the ground he noticed that Ser Jellicoe's pupils were dilated and face flushed. As Lord Rocsly called for the fight to begin Cadfael (in Kinnemorne black and gold colours, splint mail and dragon affronte shield, castle forged longsword in hand) pressed home an immediate powerful attack whilst Ser Jellicoe (in Rocsly red and orange and gold, castle forged plate and green pennants shield, also with a castle forged longsword) seemingly cowed by sheer lethality on the otherwise quiet Cadfael tried in vain to defend. It was soon obvious that Ser Jellicoe, whilst a strong knight, was completely outclassed by the unknown stranger from the far north as Cadfael was able to inflict serious wounds almost at will whilst taking only minor injuries in return. Eventually, suffering two major wounds, fatigued and with minor injuries as well, Ser Jellicoe, visibly beaten, seemed to just accept defeat. Cadfael however chose not to be merciful killing him with a single sword's thrust. The crowd reacted with a mixture of stunned silence at seeing their lord defeated twice in a few minutes and cheers for the victorious and supremely skilled warrior. Lord Rocsly turned to Master Tyrion, who was trying unsuccessfully to keep a satisfied grin off his face, and furiously ordered him and all his retainers off Rocsly lands immediately.  He said they could go to Highgarden or wherever they chose he just wanted them off Rocsly lands.  He also said that they needn't bother running all the way to King's Landing as they would find no friends there as that's where the suggestion about him barring them from Kinnemeve lands had come from.   Sensing something serious was up Septon Garrick told Maarz to leave town immediately then made the arrangements for Ser Jellicoe’s body to be transferred to the Sept for the proper rites to be said over it. Maarz left, collecting his winnings on the way.

By the time everyone had finished packing, making what arrangements they could for the new Kinnemorne soldiers and settling the bill with the innkeeper a squad of Rocsly soldiers had arrived outside their inn, which they kept in tow whilst the walked to the Sept.  With Cadfael remaining outside they went in and waited in a side chapel for the mourning rites for Ser Jellicoe to finish.  Once they were over they had a quick blessing from Septon Garrick where he told then that he and Josiah would be staying in Rocksport for a little while longer and that he had told Maarz to leave the city for his own safety.  Outside the city they spotted the Septa walking alone and virtually penniless and offered to escort her at least as far as the next large Sept. The Rocsly soldiers accompanying them made no effort to stop the Septa joining them they just made sure that everyone left Rocsly lands and did not head towards the Kinnemeve keep. Once the soldiers had left Maarz, who had been shadowing them, rejoined the group and Master Tyrion and Cadfael rode on hard for Highgarden leaving Master Gwint and Maarz to come on at a walking pace with the Kinnemorne soldiers and the Septa.

Master Tyrion and Cadfael had been riding for a day when they met an old Maester riding towards Rocksport on a mule. They warned him that the road ahead was troubled with Lord Rocsly waging an illegal war on his own bannerman the infant Lord Kinnemeve and somewhat frustrated in the Game of Thrones at the same time. The Maester introduced himself as Josh Summersby and demanded to know more as he was the new Kinnemeve Maester. He was supposed to have been Castle Lance several months ago but had been led on a wild goose chase for several months up in the far North. After bring told the whole of what had happened recently Josh vowed to get through to Castle Lance as soon as he could and to keep Master Tyrion informed of any developments to make up for his delayed arrival. A couple of days later they were met in the road by a large troop of heavily armed cavalry wearing the white rose on a green field of Highgarden lead by the Ser Ardon Tyrell who had met on their previous visit to Highgarden. Master Tyrion was encouraged to get to Highgarden as soon as possible and wait there for Lord Leo Highgardedn as he was coming back from Daeron II's court to personally deal with the situation that had arisen. Ser Ardon had been sent to bring an immediate halt to the fighting and to bring Lord Rocsly, Lord Kinnemeve and Ser Robert before Lord Tyrell immediately. Master Tyrion told him, in brief, what had happened in Rocksport over the last couple of days and was thanked for the extra information before the Highgarden soldiers resumed their ride north.

Meanwhile back in Rocksport Septon Garrick heard of two bloody but unsuccessful assaults on the keep of Castle Lance in the week before the Highgarden soldiers arrived and brought the fighting to an immediate halt.  Packing his bags he, and an incredibly nervous Josiah packed their bags and accompanied Lord Rocsly to Highgarden.
