Special Agent Brad Wilmot - Field Reports - Nov 24-Nov 26, 2008

Tuesday November 24th, 2008, 21:16

Follow up on Gammell, Brion - material witness in case #NOSOG1121

Agent Parisi and I headed to Baton Rouge to question Mr Gammell after reports from Agents Pierce and Bradley in Los Angeles indicated he may be in possession of vital evidence.  On arrival at Mr Gammell's residence (19:00hrs) in Baton Rouge (1189 Links Drive) suspicion was aroused after questioning the neighbours - Mrs Delphina Casey (1190 Links Drive).

Mrs Casey was clearly flustered, uncooperative and behaving in a suspicious manner.  I reported this to Agent Parisi and we were concerned that Mrs Casey was acting under duress, her family possibly being held hostage - this correct summation was informed through Agents Pierce and Bradley who had advised us by telephone earlier that day that armed and dangerous suspects previously encountered in New Orleans were likely to be seeking Mr Gammell.  Following standard procedure we took refuge in Mr Gammell's driveway and awaited backup from the Baton Rouge Police Department.  Command at the Baton Rouge Field Office were also notified (19:10hrs).

Before local law enforcement could arrive, we came under unprovoked fire from Mr Lawrence Smith AKA Larry Smith (deceased at scene).  Mr Smith fired a burst from an Ingram MAC-10 9mm causing a light wound to Agent Parisi.  I returned fire as did Agent Parisi as we believed our lives and the lives of citizens were at risk at that point.  I fired two .45 calibre rounds from my personal weapon.  I believe Agent Parisi fired 3 shots from his 9mm personal weapon.  We identified ourselves as Federal Agents after this first exchange of fire but Mr Smith did not respond.  Mr Smith was moving for cover and the Ingram pointed our direction when we opened fire again.  I fired two .45 calibre rounds from my personal weapon.  I believe Agent Parisi fired 3 shots from his 9mm personal weapon.  I saw Mr Smith hit in the back, left arm and right leg before falling to the ground.

At this point, further gunfire came from Mr Smith's as yet unidentified accomplices in the Casey residence from the area of the garage.  Agent Parisi and I came under fire from two gunmen.  I believe an AK-74 on burst was deployed as was a shotgun.  We retreated and awaited the arrival of Baton Rouge SWAT.  It appears that the gunmen used this interval of a minute or so to flee the scene (19:12hrs).

Agent Parisi and I handed over control of the scene to Lieutenant Robert H. Farris of BRPD SWAT at 19:15hrs.  We assisted his team in the controlled search of both 1189 and 1190 Links Drive, liberating Mr James Casey and Mrs Delphina Casey.  The body of Brion Gammell was found in the Casey residence.  He had been physically tortured using a sharp implement and then received a fatal GS to the head (9mm).

At around 21:50hrs I attended an OPR session with Agent James T. Andersen to profile the events of the night.  I surrendered my personal weapon which was returned at 23:30hrs.

Wednesday November 25th, 2008

Following a request from SA C. Devereux, SSA T. Devlin ordered Agent Parisi and I to transit to Los Angeles on the first available flight.  We arrived at 10:00hrs PST.

The SOG team met with DEA and LAFO commands to discuss options on surveillance of the Sons of Twilight in Van Nuys.  It was agreed that a two tier operation would be undertaken in the hope of discovering the whereabouts of Davis, V. Ms.  Tier 1 was agreed as a UC operation and Tier 2 as a loose surveillance plan based around Mr Michael Flynn AKA Mike Flynn, AKA Mikey Flynn, known associate of Douglas McAvoy.  Assets from the local DEA and FBI offices were agreed to ensure 24 hour coverage.  NO SOG were assigned the night shift - 2000hrs to 0800hrs.

Whilst this discussion was taking place, ATF Agents were raiding the address of Mr Lawrence Smith in the wake of the takedown in Baton Rouge.  This was a unilateral action on their behalf and apparently other Federal Agencies were neither informed or consulted.  We understand none of our suspects were apprehended at Smith's address (1341 Ethel Avenue) although several females were taken in for questioning.

Mr Flynn was quickly acquired as a doorman on the Twilight Bar and Grill (1741 Fulton Avenue) and observed to be on location from 20:18hrs to 02:00hrs.  Agents Parisi and Bradley trailed Mr Flynn to his home address where he was seen to make entrance.  The team vehicle and members were also followed and questioned by a SOT patrol.  Parabolic surveillance of the Twilight Bar elicited an intercept of a phone call believed to be between Brion James AKA Beege and Elijah Caine where it was implicated that the SOT are looking for their missing personnel but have had no news so far.

Thursday November 26th, 2008

Surveillance continued on Mr Flynn as Tier 1 investigations began to bear fruit.  Flynn again worked the door at 1741 Fulton Ave from 17:10 to 02:00hrs before heading home.  Agent Frost reported a third party surveillance may have been mounted whilst our team was on post.
